5.0L Ford Dyno Tests (S-A Design) Review

5.0L Ford Dyno Tests (S-A Design)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a Mustang enthusiast who was sorely disappointed with this book. While this book provides dyno evidence for most enthusiasts¡¯ anecdotal knowledge, it misses important tests of the standard equipment and combinations that most gear heads want to know about.
For instance, in the section which compares cams on a typical street/strip 5.0 setup w/ extrude honed Dart Iron heads, ported Cobra intake, and long tube headers, the dyno results purport to compare 8 different cams. However, in reality, the cams tested were only from three different companies: Ford Motorsport, Lunati and Crane. Additionally, the cams were not really selected for optimal use with that particular combination. A more valid test would have compared similar cam grinds among 8 different companies.
The intake section has similar shortcomings as well. The dyno results of many tests that most reasonably knowledgeable mustangers don't really care for are reported in great detail. Many comparisons are made between OEM and slightly modified OEM components vs. FRPP/SVO components. There is absolutely no comparison among the different aftermarket intake manufacturers represented here. Although there are comparisons of ported vs. unported cobra/GT40 style intakes and extrude hones OEM intakes reported here, this information is only useful to the novice who is looking to get his/her feet wet.
The supercharger and exhaust modification sections are better, but lack key dyno comparisons as well. I give credit to Richard Holdener for compiling such a comprehensive array of cheap and/or free modifications for the novice to try, but most enthusiasts would have tried these modifications already. The layout of the book is very easy to read, well organized and very well written. But, in my estimation, it is a book most suited for the novice seeking optimization of stock or SVO/FRPP components. This book is not for the gear head that knows which combo they want to run, but is seeking hard evidence from the dyno to make a particular component or brand choice.
Peace

Rochester Carburetors Review

Rochester Carburetors

Rebuilding a Rochester can be a little intimidating. Let's face it, you can't successfully work on something that you don't understand. If you read this book before you begin, you will understand what the function is of every part that you'll see on your Qj. If you've rebuilt a few Rochesters before and need to fine tune a Quadrajet for a performance engine, this book will answer most all of the questions that you might have.
Roe does an excellent job discussing carburetor theory. He shows clear, large photos of each carb circuit. The choke system on a Quadrajet can be very complex, so I've found myself pulling this book off the shelf time and again and using the excellent illustrations to figure out just how the linkage is supposed to go. He also included a helpful section on building for performance, and fixing idle problems associated with long duration camshafts.
This appears to be the later version of this book. Therefore, it also contains tips on rebuilding the dreaded "CCC" or feedback carb, also know as the electronic Quadrajet. The first version had more information on the 4GC and 2G carbs, but there is still some information provided on each.
I would like to point out one area that I disagree with the author about. Unless you are doing a concours restoration, avoid the 1965 - early 1967 Quadrajets. First of all, the pressure regulated fuel inlet valve (a deviation from a normal needle and seat) is unavailable. Most people won't even know what you are talking about when you mention it. A conversion kit to convert to a conventional needle and seat is included with most rebuild kits, but Roe recommends avoiding these. Secondly, it appears that the "issues in the field" that he mentions, were probably engine fires. Not something that I want to take a chance with.
Roe's work on Rochester carbs is important because the Rochesters, especially the Quadrajet, are vastly underated. There is a very good chance that you could run a Quadrajet on your vehicle and gain fuel efficiency without sacrificing power. In this day and age, that is no small consideration. On a 327 I've run three Quadrajets (#7045263, 7043250, and 7029207) against an out of the box fresh Holley 6619. The best Quadrajet, which happened to be new also, beat the Holley on an identical course by about two miles per gallon with no perceived loss of performance! My motivation to run the Quadrajet came largely from Roe's book. If you would like to read more about the Quadrajet - Holley comparison, type the carburetor numbers and Holley into a search engine.
Having read just about everything in print regarding Rochester carburetors and having rebuilt somewhere between fifty and one hundred Quadrajets over the last twenty years or so, I strongly recommend this book. In short, if I was looking to buy a book on Quadrajet carbs, this is the book I would buy. Roe does the builder a huge service with the many photos he uses to accompany the text. He also gives excellent tips on how to handle some of the more difficult tasks involved when rebuilding a Quadrajets as well as things to look for when troubleshooting. You will hugely increase your chances of a successful Quadrajet rebuild if you read this book first.

Gasser Wars: Drag Racing's Street Classics: 1955-1968 Review

Like Davis' previous book on Super Stockers, this one's a keeper. Unlike that one, this one has a wealth of color photographs. And Davis supplements the pix with interesting, well-researched text. Anyone with an interest in this class or drag racing history in general will love this book. An A+ effort.

In the late 1950s, thousands of street legal hot rods participated in organized drag races across the country - they ran in three major classes: Gas, Modified Production, and Modified Sports. As the racers got more serious, these cars were street legal in appearance only. Yeah, they had headlights, taillights, and interiors, but they were full-on race cars, with huge blown Hemi engines, wide racing slicks, raised front suspensions. Racers soon discovered that small, lightweight cars were the fastest, and the classic Gasser was born - cars like the Stone Woods & Cook '40 Willys. Because these cars resembled street vehicles, they had a huge fan base, and their short wheelbases and wildly overpowered engines made them exciting to watch. And, as cam manufacturers began sponsoring cars and touting their accomplishments in ads, the "Gasser Wars" were born. Thousands of spectators flocked to events where the top Gassers in the country would face off in grudge matches. Some cars even raced internationally in Europe and Australia. These were among the most popular and exciting racers of the era - many of the top original cars have been restored and are now valuable museum pieces, and the "Gasser" look is popular again among hot rodders.

Extreme Muscle Cars: High Horsepower Straight from the Factory Review

Extreme Muscle Cars: High Horsepower Straight from the Factory
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The cover states that there are forwards written by Dick Brannan, Arnie Beswick and Hayden Proffitt. My copy contained no forwards of any kind. Actual facts and research are words that can only be used loosely to describe this book. Most of it reads like a compilation of material pulled together from previously published sources, and written poorly. I was anticipating this book, but once I knew who the authors were (read some reviews on their other titles), my expectations were lowered accordingly. I am a factory lightweight fan, but can't recommend this book for even a novice who is interested them. Wait until it's in a bargain bin if you have to have it.

How to Build Max-Performance Mitsubishi 4G63t Engines (S-A Design) (Performance How-To) Review

How to Build Max-Performance Mitsubishi 4G63t Engines (S-A Design) (Performance How-To)

I bought the book recently on Amazon and must say it is EXCELLENT! One of my DSM buddies just bought it after seeing it and last night at a mini- DSM meet I showed it to a couple guys who looked through it and are now planning to buy it as well.
This book truly is an excellent reference guide on the 4G63T engine and the DSMs, Evo's and a few other cars that use it.
I am "SeaveeDSM" on the DSMtuners forums (one of the most well known forums about DSMs). This book is not a "substitute" to a car-specific forum with the wealth of knowledge available in that kind of environment nor is intended to be. But for a single-source reference where in one book almost every aspect of these engines is covered its simply fantastic.
Everything is covered from basics to more complex things about the engine. The color pics throughout are awesome and the writing style is such that even laypeople who are not mechanics (but with a basic understanding of engines) can grasp the concepts without being overwhelmed. Thats not to say its overly simplistic because its not at all. Anyone from a newbie to a certified mechanic or a prospective purchaser of a 4G63T based car would thoroughly benefit from this book.
Someone planning performance upgrades to a 4G63T based car especially should get this. It will save many times the cost of this book by following the very sound general advice and pros and cons of different performance path choices. The book does NOT try to steer someone to a particular brand or product in any way at all. It does however provide VERY accurate and correct information on the relative merits (or lack thereof) of various types of parts upgrade scenarios and paths.
This book is absolutely worth every of penny its price in my opinion.
As a "lifer" DSM owner and enthusiasts this book is a "must have".

Mitsubishi's 4G63t engine is among the most powerful engines ever in the sport-compact world. It's not uncommon to find one of these four-cylinder, iron-block, aluminum-headed, 2-liter turbocharged monsters making more than 1,000 horsepower with the right modifications and tuning well above the 200-300 hp produced in the factory-made engines. Bolted into such cars as the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, Eclipse, and Galant, and the Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser, the 4G63t has more than a cult following among sport-compact enthusiasts, who know and respect this engine's immense performance potential at the track or on the street. Up until now, in-depth performance information on the 4G63t has been hard to find. For this book, author Robert Bowen went straight to the source, Robert Garcia of Road/Race Engineering in Santa Fe Springs, California. RRE is the most well-known and respected Mitsubishi turbo performance shop in the United States, and Garcia is its in-house engine builder. Mitsubishi enthusiasts will benefit from Garcia's expertise and be able to build better, stronger engines than ever before. How to Build Max-Performance Mitsubishi 4G63t Engines covers every system and component of the engine, including the turbocharger system and engine management. More than just a collection of tips and tricks, this book includes a complete history of the engine and its evolution, an identification guide, and advice for choosing engine components and other parts. Profiles of successful built-up engines show the reader examples of what works, and the book includes helpful guidance for choosing your own engine building path.

If you were a race car fan back in the '40s and '50s, Curtis Turner is no stranger to you. Having a rural Virginia background, similar to Turner's, this book took me back to my youth, to Saturday nights at Victory Stadium in Roanoke, VA and the dirt track days at Martinsville Speedway. For younger race fans, this book provides the history and background for how NASCAR was born and the rough and tough drivers who fed the newborn. A great read.

I recently started racing. Since I'm getting more serious about it, I decided to start looking for a really nice car hauler. I stumbled across this book and love it! "NASCAR Transporters" gives a very good look inside all those trailers you see at the races. Lots of color photos are included with descrpitive text. While no costs for these fully equiped trailers are included, the reader is given plenty of background information on the trailers, packing order, optional equipment and planning. This book is a great primer for those interested in making a large car hauler purchase.
