You can never judge a book by its cover and for this book, its just as well.
I guess the limitations with ordering a book on-line, are that in many instances, you can't thumb through it first. ('search inside' was not available at time of purchase)
Top Speed is not what I thought and although the text is fairly accurate and reasonably well written, unless you're a fact-worm, it's a bit heavy going with very few photos to capture the excitement of Stock Car racing. The photos that there are, are black and white and small! The book is small and on poor quality paper and on reflection I should have returned it.

"The Chrysler engineers went through every combination that was possible. Whether it was different springs, different shocks, different sway bars, different weights...They had a book, it must have been about a two-by-three foot book! It was a heck of an engineering force."—Richard PettySeven-time NASCAR championWinner of 200 Grand National/Winston Cup races

Across decades of thrilling competition, many of NASCAR's greatest drivers—from Marvin Panch to Jim Paschal, Richard Petty to Buddy Baker, Bill Elliott to Ward Burton, Ryan Newman to Kasey Kahne—have thundered around America's legendary racetracks at the wheel of Chrysler Corporation's Dodge and Plymouth stock cars. Power, innovation, and design have characterized these remarkable vehicles, and NASCAR's record books have been written in the wake of their no-holds-barred competition.

Now, the full story of Chrysler's conquest of stock car racing is told in TOP SPEED: Dodge and Plymouth Stock Car Racing. Written by award-winning motorsports journalist Frank Moriarty, this book begins with the corporation's first sales and earliest laps, then marches through the years, arriving in the present-day world of the NASCAR "Car of Tomorrow."

Like Moriarty's best-selling SUNDAY DRIVERS: NASCAR Winston Cup Stock Car Racing and the acclaimed SUPERCARS: The Story of the Dodge Charger Daytona and Plymouth SuperBird, this new book introduces you to all the machines that have made Chrysler's racing efforts so successful. But equally important are the men behind the wheel, and you'll meet them all—including a special section containing exclusive conversations with Richard Petty, Buddy Baker, Pete Hamilton, and the legendary crew chief Harry Hyde.

Teamwork at the Track (The World of Nascar) Review

Teamwork at the Track (The World of Nascar)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Vroooom! They're off. It's the Daytona 500 where hundreds of fans in the stands crane their necks to watch the racers and millions tune in to watch the excitement from their living rooms. When Kevin Harvick sped around the last lap at 180 miles an hour to cross the finish line and snatch the trophy, he wasn't really the only person who could claim credit for the victory. Behind him was an entire team of people who worked equally hard to ensure that he'd make it to Victory Lane. It's called teamwork and without teamwork he never would have made it.
NASCAR, a name that is almost synonymous with racing these days, stands for the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. Years ago it was an every man for himself sport, but now it has evolved into a sport where teamwork is essential. In this book you'll discover all kinds of interesting facts you may not know about, unless of course you are a die-hard fan. You'll learn about the history of NASCAR, haulers, team managers, car specialists of all kinds, the head coach, the pit crew ("Weekend Warriors") and a lot more!
Do you know whose nickname is "Cat in the Hat?" If you don't, you might find you'll learn a lot by reading this book. You'll find history and photographs galore spread in the pages. In the back you'll find a chart with the most important NASCAR teams which included their owners, drivers and car numbers. This book is one of a dozen in the World of NASCAR series for the young fan.

Real NASCAR: White Lightning, Red Clay, and Big Bill France Review

Real NASCAR: White Lightning, Red Clay, and Big Bill France
Average Reviews:

I am not a NASCAR fan and will likely never see a NASCAR race but I nonetheless found this book a fascinating read. Pierce presents NASCAR's much-more-colorful-than-I'd-ever-expected history and personalities with both clarity and charm. But more than that, I was particularly engaged by how, in Pierce's telling, NASCAR's story becomes a quintessentially American tale--a microcosm of U.S.-style capitalism writ large, much as football has often been viewed as a paradigm of military engagement in its strategy and team camaraderie. The story of the France family, their competitors, the corporate sponsors, and the drivers is one of raw talent, fierce competitiveness, technological innovation at 200 miles an hour, labor relations, monopolistic ambitions, and brand building. Pierce's book is a must for anyone interested in NASCAR, but it's much more. It's a case study of American culture.

In this history of the stock car racing circuit known as NASCAR, Daniel Pierce offers a revealing new look at the sport from its postwar beginnings on Daytona Beach and Piedmont dirt tracks through the early 1970s when the sport spread beyond its southern roots and gained national recognition. Following NASCAR founder Big Bill France from his start as a mechanic, Real NASCAR details the sport's genesis as it has never been shown before. Pierce not only confirms the popular notion of NASCAR's origins in bootlegging, but also establishes beyond a doubt the close ties between organized racing and the illegal liquor industry, a story that readers will find both fascinating and controversial.Drawing on the memories of a variety of participants--including highly colorful characters like Lloyd Seay, Roy Hall, Gober Sosebee, Smokey Ynick, Bunky Knudsen, Humpy Wheeler, Bobby Isaac, Junior Johnson, and Big Bill France himself--Real NASCAR shows how the reputation for wildness of these racers-by-day and bootleggers-by-night drew throngs of spectators to the tracks in the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. They came to watch their heroes maneuver ordinary automobiles at incredible speed, beating and banging on each other, wrecking spectacularly, and fighting out their differences in the infield.Although France faced many challenges--including a fickle Detroit that often seemed unsure of its support for the sport, safety issues that killed star drivers and threatened its very existence, and drivers who twice tried to unionize to gain a bigger piece of the NASCAR pie--by the early 1970s France and his allies had laid a firm foundation for what has become today a billion-dollar industry and arguably the largest spectator sport in America. Rusty Wallace : The Decision to Win Review

Rusty Wallace : The Decision to Win

I only received this book yesterday, and as of this moment, I have about 15 pages left. It was impossible to put down, as it contained so many little-known facts about Rusty, Kenny, Mike and the rest of the people close to Rusty. Family and friends contributed many photos, old and new. There is so much about Rusty Wallace that you'll never know unless you read this book. The whole Wallace family was fully engulfed in the world of racing, and "Rusty Wallace - The Decision to Win" is a rare opportunity to take a peek inside the box of memories that was Rusty. A wonderful, wonderful read. The book's format is also very nice, and is a lot bigger in size than I expected. This book definitely will not be spending any time on a bookshelf. This book needs to be displayed on my coffee table! A must have for any RACE fan. Rusty Wallace fan, or not. It's a fascinating look at the struggles and triumphs along the road to where Rusty is today. I'd give it 10 stars if I could!

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Review

I think this was a good book. I liked this book alot. The only bad thing was that some of the words are big and difficult to understand. If I had to do a project on Dale Earnhardt Jr. I would use this book a one of my major sources. I gave this book a four since the words were hard to find what they mean. If you like nascar and you dont like him this book will change how you feel about him. This book also tells how he got his "thing" for the sport of stock car racing. It also tells in the back of the book how much he got for each race which I thought it was very interesting. So if you are looking for a good information about dale earnhardt jr, or just want something interesting to read so you go out and buy this book. Trust me it is well worth the cost.

In a sudden, three-year rush, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has become NASCAR's most significant superstar, the first to truly transcend the traditions of stock-car racing and carry the sport to the pages of People, Rolling Stones, and even Playboy. Young Earnhardt embodies the legacy and tragedy of his father, seven-time NASCAR champion Dale Earnhardt, killed at Daytona in February 2001, and he has carried that legacy rightly and modestly to victory in NASCAR's major league. Yet, Junior, even under the magnifying glass, has created a sphere in which he has become a man in his own right. In association with Circle Track and Stock Car Racing and its veteran NASCAR contributor Benny Phillips, Dale Earnhardt Jr. brings you close to this engaging young man, and close to the quiet center of a roaring phenomenon. Phillips, a 40-year veteran of the NASCAR garages and a friend of Earnhardt Sr., tells the story, with illustrative articles from Circle Track and Stock Car Racing. The photography, from Primedia sources and from top NASCAR lensman Nigel Kinrade, is illustrative and spot-on.

If you are a Dale Jarett fan, or know one, this is a must-add to your collection. It has intimate details of his family and his life growing up. There is even a little humor sprinkled here and there. Worth the oney! I got mine used through the Amazon marketpalce and am very happy with it.

Dale Jarrett is the consummate stock car racer, fiercely competitive on the track and gracious off, and the perfect representative of the sport. Here is the exciting story of his career behind the wheel, told by an award-winning journalist and filled with more than 100 action and behind-the-scenes photographs. As the son of Ned Jarrett, a former Grand National stock car champion and current dean of television motor-sports analysts, Dale seemed born to drive. But his first love was golf, and only later did he begin to race with his trademark determination and establish himself as a smart racer with superior car and track knowledge. The result was an enormously successful, decades-long career, capped by the highest honor any NASCAR driver can earn: the Winston Cup championship. Numerous quotes by and about Jarrett flesh out a remarkable portrait of one of stock car racing's hottest athletes.

Chicken Soup for the NASCAR Soul Review

Chicken Soup for the NASCAR Soul
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although I am an avid NASCAR fan, upon finishing this book, I came to the realization that you don't even have to know what NASCAR stands for to appreciate the storys and messages conveyed within the pages. I will admit some background on driver deaths would be very helpful information if I didn't know the history as well as I do. ... My favorite story is also one of the shortest in the book. "Special Delivery" will make you think twice about that big brown truck when you see it next time I gauruntee. Definitely the saddest story in the book in my opinion. (page 33- I've had so many people read it I've put the page to memory). If you've ever read Chicken Soup books, you'll know what to expect with the wide variety of topics discussed, and if you're a NASCAR fan, you'll enjoy the NASCAR ties expressed in each story. Definitely worth the price.
